Ealing, London Garden
This was more or less a blank canvas, bar a large conifer tree in the back right which we took out immediately in order to give the garden more light.
The clients had only recently moved in and wanted to get the garden sorted to use for the coming summer, not only to relax in but to also utilise for growing cut flowers. One half of the couple is a wedding stationary designer (Roxwell Press - beautiful work, do take a look), who wanted to experiment with flowering plants to use in her illustrative work and watercolour courses.
There was already a perfectly good deck stepping out from the house to the garden which they wanted to keep, whilst the rest of the garden was laid to lawn, with a somewhat rickety shed in the back.
They wanted a clean fresh design which felt private, but one which utilised the sunny back rear area of the garden as much as possible. We put a new sandstone terrace here, and then put up a privacy screen to give a feeling of the garden being tucked away. Once the climbers have grown it will feel very secluded.
The planting has a romantic feel, with lots of flowering perennials and grasses to soften. A lovely new Prunus yedoensis, a pale pink flowering cherry tree, was planted centre back of the garden to provide a little privacy from neighbouring houses, as well as flower in the spring time.
