Barrow Gurney, Bristol

This house is part of a new estate in Barrow Gurney. The large, modern houses back almost seamlessly on to some wooded land behind and the gardens have a great feeling of peacefulness as a result. It’s an odd shaped corner plot which wraps round the house and the garage, so not a straightforward garden design.

The clients were keen to keep this feeling in the garden, which has a fantastic quiet corner plot, away from the other properties. We tried to reuse as much as possible from the clients previous garden so a wooden arbour, two lovely large metal planters and a bench all got given new homes and a new purpose in life.

We were wedded to the existing paving in the garden but opted to put a new sandstone terrace to the side of the house where it was particularly sunny. The clients also decided to put in a new greenhouse here.

A new pergola with a floating bench provided a great new space to entertain, with some privacy, in the sun, looking back to the lawn and house.

A gravel walk through new wooden archways (made by the clients’ son) takes one past planting beds for herbs and perennials, past a new water fountain and to the arbour, now covered in scented roses and clematis, with views across the whole garden.
