Country Garden in Somerset

The clients have been here for over 20 years and, with the arrival of grandchildren, they finally felt it was time to do something with the garden. It’s a beautiful spot in a valley, with views up to the surrounding hills.

The clients wanted somewhere to dine and sit outside, without feeling overlooked by the road, and passers-by. A new sunken limestone circular terrace now nestles into the garden to give a feeling of privacy, surrounded with new aromatic planting. An inbuilt wooden bench follows the line of wall. This steps up to a circular dining area with a bespoke metal gazebo, planted over with scented climbers, which in time will give some privacy.

A further metal pergola has been added over the seating area to give some much needed shade. This has top opening louvred shutters to allow for sun or shade depending on the w

Walls have been faced with a warm Cotswold Stone, with self-binding gravel paths and a newly widened driveway. Estate railings give the garden a country feel, as well smartening up the entrance.

Planting will develop to clad and spill over the walls, to soften and age them. Maintenance to be on going so I’m looking forward to seeing this garden develop.

The garden now feels spacious and sits harmoniously next to the house.
