This project was for a young, professional couple who liked a very minimalist style. Their house was relatively modern and the interiors were quite sleek with muted greys and a bare minimum of carefully chosen furniture.
The existing garden was pretty bare, with a concrete paved terrace and the rest laid to lawn. The only vegetation was a large tree to the back left which was to be retained. The couple wanted to have as much privacy as possible, so new fencing was a definite requirement.
For paving we chose a beautiful pale grey cement porcelain tile, which they hope to mirror in the downstairs hallway inside. We extended the terrace slightly to create as large an area as possible for outside entertaining, with some lovely wide wooden benches, with plinths either side to stand either drinks and/or lanterns on. Behind the bench was a raised bed intended for herbs and other aromatics, as well as providing a back rest to the bench. All rendered cement work was painted in a very pale grey. New hit and miss fencing was installed to give privacy and clean lines.
Ziggy the dog required an all year round lawn and, as busy people, the clients were keen to use astro turf rather than real lawn, keep down the maintenance. We managed to level out the lawn and take out the slight up hill slope to create a fairly decent sized area, with two narrow beds either side for simple evergreen hedging.
As neither client boasted green fingers we decided to take out the proposed bed under the tree and to gravel right the way across at the back of the garden. This allowed water to still get to the roots of the large tree whilst providing an area to put garden storage on for the couple’s fitness equipment and bikes, rather than cluttering up the terrace.
The clients decided to do the planting themselves.
